If you’re trying to decide where to stay in Santa Marta, the choice between El Rodadero, Bello Horizonte and Pozos Colorados comes down to one simple question:
Do you want to be where things are happening, or do you want to retreat from them?
All three areas are on the coast and have plenty of beachfront accommodation. But the experience of staying in each one is quite different.
El Rodadero: The Best Choice for Most Travelers
Of the three, El Rodadero is by far the most lively and convenient place to stay. It’s a proper tourist neighborhood, not just a collection of beachfront hotels and apartment towers.
You can walk out of your accommodation and immediately find restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, supermarkets, tour operators and places to grab something to eat. There is simply much more happening around you. The area is busy, sometimes noisy and definitely more commercial, but that’s also what makes it fun.
El Rodadero also has a big advantage if you like being active. There are better options for walking, jogging and getting out into nature, including trails and routes around the surrounding hills. The area also gives you easy access to boat trips, Playa Blanca, snorkeling and other activities.
For me, this is one of the biggest differences. You can actually make El Rodadero your base for exploring Santa Marta rather than spending most of your time inside your hotel.
The restaurant scene is another major advantage. There are dozens of places to eat within a relatively small area, from inexpensive local restaurants to seafood, international food and lively bars. Donde Chucho Especialidad En Mariscos and PUNTA BRAVA RESTAURANTE are just two examples of the kind of dining options you’ll find around the neighborhood.
That density of restaurants and businesses makes a big difference when you’re staying for a week or more. You don’t have to take a taxi every time you want a coffee, dinner, a beer or something to do.
Bello Horizonte: Better for a Resort Vacation
Bello Horizonte has a very different feel. It’s quieter, more spread out and much more oriented toward beachfront hotels, condominiums and resort-style accommodation. The beach itself is attractive and the area is generally calmer than El Rodadero.
The problem is that once you walk a few blocks back from the beach, there isn’t nearly as much going on. You’ll find some restaurants and essential services, but the neighborhood doesn’t have the same concentration of businesses, activities and places to wander around that you get in El Rodadero.
There is a small shopping center around Bello Horizonte, but it’s not really comparable to having an entire tourist neighborhood on your doorstep.
This makes Bello Horizonte a good choice if you’re staying at a nice resort and plan to spend most of your time there. Have breakfast, sit by the pool, walk on the beach, have dinner and repeat. If that’s your idea of a vacation, Bello Horizonte can be excellent.
It’s also convenient for the airport and tends to appeal to families and travelers looking for a quieter beach experience.
But if you like getting up in the morning and wandering around to find a café, going for a run, grabbing lunch somewhere different, meeting people or spontaneously deciding what to do that afternoon, El Rodadero is much better suited to that style of travel.
Pozos Colorados: Quiet, Residential and Resort-Oriented
Pozos Colorados takes the same idea even further. It’s one of the quieter beachfront areas south of Santa Marta, with newer developments, large apartment buildings and upscale hotels.
It’s a pleasant place to stay if your priority is peace and quiet. The beach is less hectic and the atmosphere is much more residential and resort-oriented than El Rodadero.
There are restaurants, shops and basic services around the area, so it’s not completely isolated. But the overall experience is still much more about staying somewhere nice and enjoying the beach than having a huge selection of things to do outside your accommodation.
That’s why I would see Pozos Colorados as particularly attractive for people who want a slower pace. It could be a good fit for retirees, longer-term residents or anyone who doesn’t care about nightlife and would rather have a quiet apartment near the ocean.
You can always take a taxi into El Rodadero or central Santa Marta when you want more activity. But if you’re going to be doing that several times a week, you might as well consider staying closer to where the action is.
So Which One Should You Choose?
Choose El Rodadero if you want the most fun and convenient base.
It’s the best of these three areas for restaurants, activities, walking around, jogging, nightlife and having plenty of things to do without getting in a taxi.
Choose Bello Horizonte if you’re primarily looking for a resort vacation.
It’s quieter and more relaxed, and it makes sense if most of your day will be spent at your hotel, on the beach or by the pool.
Choose Pozos Colorados if you really value peace and quiet.
It’s the most residential and subdued option of the three, and it makes more sense for a slower lifestyle than for an action-packed holiday.
For an active traveller who wants to experience Santa Marta rather than simply sit beside a hotel pool, I’d pick El Rodadero without much hesitation. You can always escape somewhere quieter for the afternoon. It’s harder to create a lively neighborhood around you when there simply isn’t much there.
